Shipping Bags from China: Sea vs Air vs Express Compared
Volumetric weight, CBM, transit times and costs — how to choose the right method for your order.
Bags are light and bulky. That single fact drives every shipping decision: you are paying for space, not weight. Here is how to choose between sea, air and express.
Why volume, not weight, decides your cost
Carriers charge whichever is greater: actual weight or volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is calculated as (length × width × height in cm) ÷ 5000 for air and express, or ÷ 6000 for some couriers. A carton of 1,000 non-woven totes may weigh 20 kg but measure 60 × 50 × 70 cm — which is 42 kg volumetric. You pay for 42 kg.
Sea freight works differently: it is priced per CBM (cubic metre). Same carton: 0.21 CBM.
The three options
| Method | Transit | Cost profile | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Express (DHL / FedEx / UPS) | 3–7 days | Highest per kg, door-to-door, no customs paperwork for you | Samples, 100–500 pcs, urgent top-ups |
| Air freight | 5–10 days | Mid cost, airport to airport (plus pickup and clearance) | 1,000–5,000 pcs when time matters |
| Sea LCL | 25–40 days | Low cost per CBM, shared container | From about 2 CBM upward |
| Sea FCL | 25–45 days | Lowest cost per bag, dedicated container | Large programmes, 15+ CBM |
Rough volume guide
Exact figures depend on bag size and packing, but for a standard 38 × 42 cm non-woven tote, flat-packed and compressed:
- 500 pcs — roughly 1–2 cartons — express is usually the best balance.
- 3,000 pcs — roughly 4–6 CBM — LCL sea freight starts to win clearly.
- 20,000 pcs — around 25–35 CBM — a 20ft container (about 28 CBM usable) is often ideal.
Ask us for a CBM calculation on your exact bag — we will give you one with your quote.
How to cut freight cost
- Compress and flat-pack. Bags have a lot of trapped air; proper folding and compression can cut volume noticeably.
- Remove individual poly bags if you do not need them.
- Use the largest carton that stays within handling limits — fewer cartons, less void space.
- Ship heavier or denser items with the bags if you have other goods from the same region.
- Book sea freight in the off-peak window — rates spike before Chinese New Year and in Q4.
Customs and paperwork
Whoever clears the goods needs: commercial invoice, packing list, Bill of Lading or Air Waybill, HS code, and in some markets a Certificate of Origin or test reports. If you would rather not deal with it, ask for a DDP quote and we handle freight, duty and clearance in one price.
Insurance
Insure the shipment. Marine insurance typically costs a small fraction of the goods value, and freight forwarders' liability is limited by international convention — without your own policy, a lost container is a total loss. Under CIF terms we arrange cover to your port; under DDP it is included.
Peak-season planning
- August–November: pre-holiday rush — book space earlier and expect higher rates.
- Chinese New Year: factories close 2–4 weeks; capacity tightens for weeks either side.
- Golden Week (early October): a shorter but real capacity dip.
Add at least two weeks of buffer to any sea-freight plan in these windows.
Which should you choose?
- Sample or first small order: express.
- Marketing deadline in three weeks: air.
- Cost-sensitive restock with no deadline pressure: sea LCL.
- Full programme, planning months ahead: sea FCL.
