FOB vs CIF vs DDP: A Buyer Guide for Bag Imports

Compare the named delivery point, risk transfer, freight, insurance and import-clearance responsibilities—not just the bag price. EcoBag Factory publishes FOB Guangzhou as its standard basis; CIF or DDP can be requested and are confirmed per product, route and order.

Incoterms® 2020 allocates selected seller/buyer obligations, delivery, risk and costs; it does not resolve every tax, title or payment issue. Name the port/place and version in the contract. The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) publishes the rules; this is a sourcing aid, not legal advice.

The three terms buyers use most

RuleDelivery and risk pointMain cost / clearance allocation
FOB named port of shipmentRisk transfers when goods are on board the vesselSeller handles export clearance and delivery on board; buyer arranges main carriage and import clearance
CIF named destination portRisk transfers on board at shipment, not on arrivalSeller pays carriage and required insurance to destination port; buyer handles import clearance and onward delivery
DDP named destination placeSeller bears delivery risk to the agreed destination point, ready for unloadingSeller handles import clearance and duties/taxes under the rule; quote must confirm the actual scope and feasibility

FOB and CIF are for sea or inland-waterway transport. They should not be treated as interchangeable with a door-delivery quote. ICC Academy guidance says FOB should not normally be used for container shipments, where FCA may better match handover to a carrier before loading; discuss the named handover point with your forwarder.

FOB: buyer-arranged main carriage

Under FOB, the seller delivers on board the buyer-nominated vessel at the named port and handles export formalities. The buyer arranges main carriage and import clearance; risk transfers once the goods are on board. FOB Guangzhou is EcoBag Factory's published standard basis; confirm the named shipment point and origin charges in the quote.

Confirm who books the vessel, which terminal costs are included and which broker clears the goods. For containers handed to a carrier before vessel loading, discuss whether FCA better matches the handover.

CIF: freight included to your port

Under CIF, the seller pays carriage and required insurance to the named destination port, but delivery and risk transfer when goods are loaded on board at the shipment port. The buyer handles import clearance, duties/taxes and onward transport.

Confirm the insurance clause and amount, obtain the insurance document, and compare CIF against the same cargo and ports under FOB plus freight and destination charges.

DDP: seller-managed import delivery

DDP makes the seller responsible under the rule for import clearance and applicable duties/taxes, with delivery to the named place. It can be used for different transport modes. The seller must confirm it can complete the required import formalities in that destination.

Specify whether the destination is a port, warehouse, business address or fulfilment centre; confirm unloading, appointments, taxes, importer of record and exclusions. A single quoted price does not by itself define these details.

Compare landed-cost quotations consistently

There is no generic duty rate or freight amount for “a bag”; costs depend on the goods, classification, route and current customs treatment. Compare one confirmed shipment on these points:

  • Bag type, material, dimensions, quantity and packed carton count, measurements and gross weight.
  • Named departure port/place and named destination port/place, with Incoterms® 2020 stated.
  • Separate freight, insurance, origin/destination handling, customs clearance, duties/taxes and final delivery lines.
  • Importer of record, unloading, appointment, storage, demurrage and other exclusions or conditional charges.
  • Quote validity date, currency, payment milestones and the person responsible for each step.

Use the product classification and duty/tax estimate provided or checked by a qualified customs broker for the destination. Do not copy an old example percentage or use an Incoterm alone to calculate the final landed cost.

Choose by control and delivery responsibility

If you manage freight and import clearance, compare FOB with your own full route quote. If you want seller-arranged ocean freight/insurance, request CIF and check the origin risk point and port charges. If you want seller-managed import delivery, request DDP and confirm importer status, tax treatment and exclusions. For container cargo handed over before loading, discuss FCA.

Duty rates and HS codes

Do not select an HS code from a short web article or from the material name alone. Classification depends on the product's construction, intended use and destination tariff rules. Ask your customs broker or competent authority to confirm the code and applicable duty treatment for the exact bag before using it in a cost model.

What our prices include and exclude

Published prices use FOB Guangzhou as the standard basis, with 1–2 colour print included. The wholesale page says CIF or DDP can be requested and are confirmed per product, route and order. Ask for a written quotation that names the agreed place and lists included charges, taxes, insurance and exclusions.

Next step

Send your bag specification, quantity, packed carton details and destination to request the applicable shipping options. FOB Guangzhou is standard; CIF or DDP can be requested and confirmed for the route and order. Request a bag and shipping quote.

Frequently asked questions

When does risk transfer under CIF?
Under CIF Incoterms 2020, the seller pays the cost of carriage and required insurance to the named destination port, but delivery and risk transfer when the goods are loaded on board the vessel at the port of shipment. Confirm the named ports and insurance cover in the contract.
Does DDP include import clearance and taxes?
DDP places import-clearance and duty responsibilities on the seller under the rule, but a quote must state the named place, scope, tax treatment, unloading and any exclusions. The seller must confirm it can perform the import formalities for the destination.
Is FOB suitable for a container shipment?
FOB and CIF are sea or inland-waterway rules. ICC guidance says FOB should not normally be used for container shipments; FCA may better reflect handover to a carrier before loading. Confirm the appropriate rule with the buyer, supplier and forwarder.
What should I compare across Incoterm quotations?
Compare the same goods, quantity, packing, named place or port, Incoterms version, transport scope, insurance, import-clearance and tax responsibilities, unloading, destination handling and exclusions. Request each cost and responsible party in writing.
Which Incoterm is the default on EcoBag Factory quotes?
FOB Guangzhou is the published standard. CIF or DDP can be requested and are confirmed per product, route and order. Ask for a written quotation showing the exact named place, scope and exclusions.
