Private Label & OEM Bag Manufacturing: How It Works

The difference between OEM, ODM and private label — and what you need to launch your own bag line.

If you sell bags under your own brand, you are buying one of three ways: OEM, ODM or private label. The differences affect cost, speed to market and how much design control you have.

The three models

ModelWho designs the bag?Best for
OEMYou — we manufacture to your drawingBrands with a clear product vision
ODMWe offer a design, you adapt itFastest route to market
Private labelA standard bag, branded as yoursPromo lines, retail basics, gifting

What each model costs you

OEM carries design and pattern-making work up front, but gives the most control and the strongest brand differentiation. ODM saves the development cost and shortens the timeline — we have styles ready to adapt to your colour, size and print. Private label is the cheapest and fastest: take a bag we already make, add your branding, and go.

Most brands we work with start with ODM or private label for their first order, then move towards OEM once they know what sells.

Branding options you can add

  • Printed logo — silk-screen (1–2 colours included), heat transfer or digital full colour
  • Embroidery — premium finish on canvas and heavier cotton
  • Woven label — sewn inside the top seam or on the handle, the classic garment-industry marker
  • Printed care label — composition, origin and washing instructions
  • Metal or leather patch — for premium positioning
  • Hang tag — printed card with your brand, barcode or story
  • Custom packaging — poly bag with a printed header card, belly band, or individual gift box
  • Barcode / FNSKU sticker — for retail and Amazon FBA

MOQ for branding elements

Our base MOQ is 500 pcs per style and colour. Labels, tags and packaging are usually quoted per 1,000 pcs because they are printed in batches. If your first order is 500 pcs, expect a slightly higher unit cost on the label and tag items — or order them for your next, larger run.

What we need to start

  1. Bag style — your drawing, a reference photo, or one of our ODM styles
  2. Size, material and weight (e.g. 12 oz natural canvas, 38 × 42 cm)
  3. Handles and construction details (gusset, inner pocket, zipper)
  4. Print artwork and placement, plus label and tag artwork
  5. Packaging requirements
  6. Target quantity and delivery date

Typical timeline for a private-label launch

StageTime
Spec and digital mock-up1–2 days
Sample (bag + label + tag)3–7 working days
Sample shipping3–7 days
Bulk production15–25 working days
Sea freight to your warehouse25–45 days

A realistic first launch from zero to stock in hand: 8–12 weeks.

Design rights and exclusivity

For OEM work, your design remains yours. If you need exclusivity — nobody else in your market can buy that style — tell us at the quotation stage; we can agree a written exclusivity arrangement tied to a minimum annual volume. Always put ownership of your artwork and patterns in writing.

What to look for in an OEM partner

  • In-house pattern making and sampling (not outsourced)
  • Experience with your material — non-woven, cotton, poly-cotton or liners
  • Label and tag sourcing as part of the package
  • Consistent quality between the sample and repeat orders
  • Clear QC and a photo report before every shipment

Next step

Send a reference photo or drawing and tell us your target market and quantity. We will come back with a mock-up, a spec and an OEM/ODM quote. Start your private label project.
